As the summer winds ease, the water around the Greek anchorages settles and visibility improves. For owners and managers, that calm is an opportunity. Autumn is the easiest time of year to send divers down, and the work they do below the waterline pays for itself in fuel.
A Clean Hull Is Cheaper to Run
Marine growth on a hull acts like a brake. According to an IMO study, a slime layer only half a millimetre thick across half the hull can push fuel consumption and emissions up by 20 to 25 percent. Add a light covering of barnacles and the figure climbs much higher. Since fuel is the single largest cost in most voyage budgets, a few hours of cleaning at anchor can return the money many times over on the next leg.

Why the Timing Matters
Divers need calm water, and calm water is seasonal in Greece. Through July and August the meltemi keeps the Aegean lively and jobs slip from day to day while everyone waits for a weather window. From September the sea flattens and the swell drops, so work that took a week of waiting in August often gets done in a single visit.
What Can Be Done at Anchor
Plenty of work happens with the vessel afloat, which keeps her earning:
- Hull cleaning: removal of slime and growth to restore speed and fuel performance
- Propeller polishing: a smooth propeller delivers noticeably better efficiency
- Diver inspections: hull, rudder, thrusters, sea chests and anodes
- Class-approved reporting: video and photo records accepted for survey purposes
- Minor repairs: attention to small findings before they reach the dry dock list
Where We Arrange It
The Piraeus anchorage is the natural choice, with sheltered water and a deep pool of qualified diving contractors close at hand. We also arrange underwater work at anchorages around the country, from Eleusis Bay and Kalamata to Vatika, Kali Limenes and Heraklion. See the full list of Greek ports we cover.
Plan It Before the Weather Turns
The autumn window stays open into November in most years. Booking now secures a choice of dates and contractors. We handle the permits, the boats and the reporting, and we attend on site so the work is done properly. See our full range of ship agency services.
